Get to know your INSECTS better
Here's all you need to know about the insect's biology:
- Bactrocera dorsalis
- B. zonata (also known as B. mangiferae)
- B. cucurbitae
- B. invadens.
2. Mealy bugs
These tiny organisms, barely visible unless they are in a group, look like a harmless tuft of cottony outgrowth. They can attack on the tree as well as the fruit. This means that they can attack all year round, making them a constant threat to the tree. They attack other plants like cotton also, and are every farmer's headache. The species which cause the most damage are:
- Rastrococcus invadens
- Rastrococcus spinosus.
3. Mango Seed and Pulp Weevil
These insects are about the size of one's nail (about 1 cm). They can be distinguished by a snout like structure near their mouth. These are found in most mango growing regions across the world and cause great trouble since the damage they cause may go unnoticed till the fruit is being transported. They attack during the early fruit development stages; the pea and marble stage. The species which chiefly are spotted are:
- Seed Weevil: Sternochetus mangiferae, S. gravis
- Pulp Weevil: Sternochetus frigidus
4. Red Banded Mango CaterpillarThey are very distinctively marked with bands and have a black collar near the mouth. They specifically trouble mango growers in Asian countries. While their life cycle isn't completely understood, they cause 10-15% commercial losses. Worst of all, these attack the fruit throughout its journey- during both the juvenile and developed stages. The troublesome insect is:- Deanolis sublimbalis
- Fruit flies
- Bactrocera dorsalis
- B. zonata (also known as B. mangiferae)
- B. cucurbitae
- B. invadens.
